“Leveraging AI Technologies in the Design of Historical Fabrics and Enriching the Dramatic Narrative

Abstract

Historical fabrics have always been significant, not merely as functional tools but as symbolic and aesthetic elements enhancing the realism of dramatic storytelling and immersing the audience in the narrative. The choice of fabrics reflects the era, social class, and psychological states of characters. For instance, botanical and geometric patterns were used in Arab textiles, while royal symbols dominated European designs. Fabrics also convey narrative shifts, like transitioning from heavy fabrics in war scenes to lighter ones in peace. The German term "costume films" emphasizes the visual importance of clothing in historical movies.

This research addresses the challenge of drama producers relying on imported fabrics due to the lack of high-quality historical Jacquard fabrics, or resorting to leatherwork and hand embroidery. It proposes leveraging AI technologies to design and develop historical men’s fabrics, enriching dramatic narratives and creating authentic visuals reflecting the Hashashins’ historical period.

The study highlights the potential of AI to bridge gaps in undocumented historical fabrics, balancing accuracy with artistic imagination. It evaluates AI’s role in designing and renewing historical men’s textiles while ensuring historical authenticity and aligning with filmmakers' artistic visions.

Results show that fabrics are essential to credibility in drama, and while AI inspires quick creativity, it requires integration with historical references and specialized techniques for accuracy. The study recommends using technologies like VR and AR to simulate and refine fabric choices digitally before production, enhancing quality and performance.
