Abstract

The adaptive reuse of heritage buildings as retail spaces represents one of the most effective and innovative approaches to achieving sustainability goals within urban environments. This process allows for the integration of cultural and architectural identity preservation with the fulfillment of contemporary economic demands, by transforming buildings into new functions that serve the community. This approach capitalizes on the symbolic and historical value of old structures, converting them into vibrant commercial spaces that enhance their appeal and contribute to the revitalization of historical districts without compromising their authenticity.

This research explores the concepts of adaptive reuse, which involves converting a building from its original function into a new one that meets modern needs, while preserving as much of its original character as possible—whether in terms of architectural form, materials, or symbolic meaning. Heritage buildings offer an ideal environment for this type of architectural intervention due to their historical and cultural significance and the rich design possibilities they offer.

The study emphasizes the importance of blending historical elements with modern interior design strategies. This fusion is critical to the success of adaptive reuse projects, as interior design is not only about functionality and aesthetics but also plays a strategic role in conveying the identity of the space to users and customers. When adaptive reuse is implemented effectively, the building retains its spirit while becoming an active component of the city’s economic and social cycle.
